LFF The Expanse Exhibition at BFI 2020

Project Description

Virtual Umbrella was asked by BFI to work with the XR Team to staff and work on the exhibition space created at the BFI for the London Film Festival 2020. The XR team had created an accessible programme of 6DOF and 360 content that would be available in The Expanse – a virtual environment hosting all the content available via Oculus Rift/s, Quest and HTC. The 360 content was also available via Oculus TV and the BFI YouTube channel. The programme was also available in a physical installation at the BFI.

Our priority during the exhibition was to ensure COVID-safe measures were maintained and the exhibition remained a safe environment for members of the public. The BFI Southbank had in place temperature machines, track and trace and social distancing. In the expanse exhibition we had limited number of people moving in the space, we used Uvisan machines to clean all equipment between each session.

The COVID measures;

  • Each piece of equipment was put into the UVISAN – an ultraviolet cleaning unit after every single use.
  • Each pod had cleaning wipes available to the members of the public
  • Each pod had cleaning spray for the chairs to be cleaned between each use
  • Mask, VR eye coverings, gloves were provided in the space
